Chinese Lacquer: Inheritance and Innovation of China’s Lacquerware


China is the first country to discover lacquer and put it into application. A combination of lacquer materials and techniques, lacquerware has long been known as a traditional Chinese handicraft.


This exhibition is the first in the series “A Selection of the Best Contemporary Lacquerware Exhibition” at the Zhejiang Provincial Museum, which includes the most representative lacquer works using the techniques of carved lacquer, rhino skin lacquer and incised color.

Ink Wonders of San Wu: Masterpieces of Ming Calligraphy from Jinmotang Collection


With a selection of Ming calligraphy masterpieces from Jinmotang Collection and a number of cultural relics borrowed from other museums, the exhibition aims to present a complete picture on the development of calligraphy in southern China that was centered around Wumen School during the Ming dynasty (1368-1644). A total of 93 pieces (sets) of calligraphy and paintings will be on display, most of which are open to the public for the first time. This is also the museum’s first academic exhibition that focuses on private collections.

Soaring Wings: Journey of the Crested Ibi

Produced by by Shanghai Dance Theater, the dance drama explores the fate of crested ibises, a beautiful and rare creature that symbolizes happiness and blessings in ancient China. Through the crested ibises, the dance drama aims to show humans’ pursuit of harmonious coexistence with all other species.

Rhinoceros in Love

A classic of modern Chinese theater, Rhinoceros in Love is a play directed by renowned director Meng Jinghui and tells the story of a rhinoceros feeder’s obsessive and dangerous love for his beautiful neighbor. Debuted in 1999, the play has been performed in more than a dozen countries, including the US, Australia and Italy, among others, over the past two decades. And it has been translated into many foreign languages.


When: June 24, 2021—June 27, 2021
