Jin Yong: Brotherly Colleague

In my youth years, I was a fan of Jin Yong’s Wuxia novels. I admired him very much. But that says all about my sentiment toward him. In the first half of 1999, Jin Yong was appointed to the presidency of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities of Zhejiang University. At that time my study in France was not yet over. I returned to the university in October and was appointed to the administration of the faculty. In late October, Jin Yong met all of us staff and teachers. It was the first time I met him. He was affable. We chatted gladly after he learned that I specialized in the history of France. To us, he was Mr. Cha, but he was much appreciated if we called him “Great Brother”.

Back then, Jin Yong’s appointment to the presidency of the faculty caused a big stir among some scholars in the country. Some questioned his academic qualifications. I admired him as a scholar of profound knowledge. When we chatted about France, he spoke French words now and then and he directed me to look at the taproots of some problems in the history of France. I felt he knew pretty much about the history of France. When an Oxford professor came to give a lecture at the faculty at the invitation of Jin Yong, Jin Yong acted as the interpreter at the lecture. His English proficiency and deep knowledge of international affairs were impressive. After I was appointed to be the deputy president of the faculty, I was put in charge of graduate courses and doctoral students. I saw some test questions faxed to the faculty from Jin Yong for enrolling doctoral candidates of history and literature. Examinees of history were required to answer how major inventions of ancient Chinese spread to the west. I felt that the question could be answered either briefly or in great length. Examinees of literature were required to compare the differences between legendary stories of the Tang and the mythical literary sketches of the Wei and the Jin and give a detailed analysis. The two questions reflected his scholarship in history and literature. In my opinion, Jin Yong was a qualified expert and scholar and it was the honor of Zhejiang University to have him serve as the president of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities.

I was deeply impressed with the master’s relationship with his colleagues and students. In the autumn of 2001, he came to the school and wanted to have a rap session with students. It happened that Vice President Xu Dai and I were teaching a course and we brought students over to meet Jin Yong at the Radisson Hotel where he was staying. The session lasted the whole afternoon and Jin Yong signed all the books the students brought over. In signing, Jin Yong showed his literary talent and fast thinking. His witty and poetic inscriptions responded aptly to individual names.

Jin Yong was honest and straightforward. He disliked some things of officialdom and disliked those who fished for fame and compliments. He refused point-blank to sign pirated copies. My friendship with Jin Yong changed my attitude toward life: one should be free and honest in everyday life and be honest, dedicated and rigorous in work and academic studies. Even if you don’t drink, you never refrain from finding out the taste of good wine. A sanctimonious look doesn’t necessarily represent the real. One should be affable and honest and innocent.

He didn’t visit Hangzhou after 2008. Some colleagues and I visited Jin Yong in Hong Kong for three consecutive years from 2010 to 2012. He was very happy to see us. In 2012, he was too weak to walk. He moved around in wheelchair. After a banquet, he saw us off. I still remember seeing him waving goodbye to us. This is my last memory of him.
