On his way from Shizuoka to Hangzhou on a jumbo jet, Kazuto Maeda spent three hours writing his notes to get ready for the first Zhejiang Media Cooperation and Communication Forum with International Friendship Cities organized by the Zhejiang provincial government.
This was his second visit to Hangzhou, representing the Information and PR Department of Shizuoka Prefecture. His first visit was also in Hangzhou’s “osmanthus season” a year ago, when the city was perfumed with osmanthus fragrance.
“I was a little nervous last time I was here, but I made many friends who I have been keeping in touch. Knowing that I have friends here fills warmth in me, and made my second visit an even more unforgettable experience.”
Shizuoka Prefecture and Zhejiang Province officially established a sister relation in 1982, 10 years after the normalization of the Sino-Japanese diplomatic relations. Over the past 37 years, the relation has blossomed into in-depth communication and cooperation in various economic and cultural aspects. The launch of the Mt. Fuji Shizuoka Airport in 2009, together with the opening of flight services linking Hangzhou and Ningbo with Shizuoka, has further shortened the geographical and psychological distance between the two places.
For his second visit to Hangzhou, Maeda brought two issues of Shizuoka Monthly, in which the success of the performances in Shizuoka by a delegation of dancers from the Zhejiang Vocational Academy of Art was featured. The successful inscription of Liangzhu City onto the UNESCO World Heritage Site List was shared with Shizuoka residents by the October edition of the magazine.
“Have you been to Shizuoka?” Maeda asked before we started the chat.
“Nope,” I replied.
“Then what do you know about Shizuoka?” He challenged.
“Mt. Fuji and Izu hot springs,” I replied. Even for someone who has never been there, the fame of Mt. Fuji, together with its undulating tea plantations and the hot springs of Izu, needs no introduction.
Throughout the interview, “warmth” was brought up by Maeda multiple times. It is perhaps the best word to describe his feelings as a cultural ambassador.
Q&A
Q: This is your second time in Hangzhou. How do you feel about the city?
Maeda: Generally speaking, Hangzhou and Shizuoka have a lot in common, such as refreshing, soothing autumn days, gorgeous views of lakes, and tea. Shizuoka is a key tea production prefecture in Japan, with its tea cultivation history dating back to more than 800 years ago, when a master monk brought tea trees from Zhejiang back to Japan. I am also impressed by the harmony of interpersonal relations of Hangzhou people.
Q: What do you feel are the highlights of the cultural communication between Hangzhou and Shizuoka in the year 2019?
Maeda: I attended an event in Shizuoka in August when a teenage student journalist from Zhejiang gave a violin performance after the interview. After the journalist’s performance, Dr. Heita Kawakatsu, Governor of Shizuoka Prefecture, was very happy to plays the violin. The improvised show turned out to be the highlight of the day, filling joy and warmth in everyone. A delegation of dancers representing the Hangzhou-based Zhejiang Vocational Academy of Art visited Shizuoka in September for the warm-up of the “Tokyo 2020” Olympics.
Q: Mt. Fuji was enlisted as a World Heritage in 2013. The Liangzhu site in Hangzhou joined the hall of fame in 2019. What kind of experiences do you think Shizuoka can share with Zhejiang Province regarding the protection and inheritance of cultural heritages?
Maeda: It is a pity that I haven’t seen the Liangzhu site with my own two eyes. I am looking forward to having a visit. The rise of the fame of Mt. Fuji after the granting of the World Heritage status brought in a sea of tourists, and generated some pressing issues such as garbage processing. Shizuoka is always happy to see more people come to visit Mt. Fuji, but the improvement of environmental protection is equally important.
Q: What kind of preparation work have you done for the forum in Hangzhou?
Maeda: I really appreciate the efforts the organizers put into this forum for the international media to exchange ideas. I learned quite a lot from my visit to the Zhejiang Daily, and I hope there will be more opportunities to communicate more and better with our counterparts in Zhejiang. When the delegation from Zhejiang TV visited Shizuoka last year, language and cultural difference added to the difficulty of the video-recording process, although we tried our best to get ready. At the end of the project, everyone was happy because the communication throughout was based on sincerity. With many of them, I have been keeping in touch on WeChat. I have made a lot of friends in China, which I consider as an important asset of my career as well as my personal life.
Exploring Zhejiang
By Kazuto Maeda
The real journey started after the conclusion of the forum on October 11. The first stop was the China Silk Museum based in Hangzhou. I was brought back to the ancient times of China and carried away by the stunning beauty of the glossy fabric behind the glass. In the museum, I rediscovered the beauty of “blue”, my favorite color.
The next stop was the tourist center of the city’s “special industries”. A world of high technologies and their wonderful application in almost all aspects of people’s daily life unfolded in front of me, making me feel the excitement of the blessings of modern sciences making the life of everyone richer and safer.
The sheer size of the Small Commodities Market in Yiwu was awe-inspiring. It is estimated that there are so many business booths in the huge marketplace that it would take 1.5 years to visit them all if one would spend three minutes at one booth and spend eight hours a day in the marketplace. It takes my breath away after I learned that about two-thirds of the Christmas goods serving the global market are made in Yiwu. It is no exaggeration to say that the smiling faces of numerous children all over the world are created by Yiwu.
For me, the most impressive episode of the journey was the scenery and vibrant life of people in Songxi Village in Pujiang County. The village, still quite lived in, is well known for its stone artifacts craft. We were welcomed in by a group of drum players and a feast of local delicacies that tasted just like the enchanting history of the village.
I feel lucky to have been given the opportunity to visit Zhejiang. I look forward to seeing more achievements in the communication between Zhejiang and Shizuoka.
