Sponsored by the Information Office of Zhejiang Provincial People’s Government, the Foreign Affairs Office of Zhejiang Provincial People’s Government, Zhejiang Daily Group and Zhejiang Radio and TV Group, the 1st the first Zhejiang Media Cooperation and Communication Forum with International Friendship Cities kicked off in Hangzhou in the sweet osmanthus season of the city, and was attended by about 120 media representatives from 67 countries, famous think tanks, representatives from Zhejiang media groups, scholars and special guests from all over Zhejiang Province. The theme of the forum can be summarized as the pursuit of love, friendship, fusion, mutual understanding and respect, as shown in the following abstracts of the speeches from some participants.
Bring the Beauty I See Back Home
Lee Donggeun (Republic of Korea)
Jeollanam-do and Zhejiang established friendly relationship in 1998. A brotherly friendship has been maintained since then. The cooperation and exchanges between the two have borne rich fruit. In celebration of the 20th anniversary of the founding of the friendly relations between the two sides in 2018, a delegation from Zhejiang visited Jeollanam-do. Their participation and performance made the celebrations successful and memorable.
Zhejiang and Jeollanam-do have a bond that goes back to a long time ago. We started friendly exchanges through marine routes of the Yellow Sea since the medieval times. In order to achieve shared prosperity between China and Republic of Korea, we should expand our cooperation and exchanges and we in the media should become the compass for the Chinese and ROK governments on the basis of exchanges and shared coverage. I sincerely hope the relations between Zhejiang and Jeollanam-do are more than the past 20 years. They should extend to the next 200 years and even 1,000 years. I will report the development and beautiful tourism resources I have seen in Zhejiang to our people in Jeollanam-do.
Sunset of the West Lake, Beauty and Serenity
Gert Grobler (South Africa)
Every time I am in Hangzhou, I was impressed by the size and vigor of the development that is taking place here. The sunset of the West Lake, together with its various scenic sites, and the serenity is captivating. The province truly lives up to its reputation as a paradise for tourists and a land of cornucopia.
The forum in Hangzhou allows us to see the world in different dimensions. Through face-to-face communication, prejudice is minimized and we see things and reach conclusions objectively. Such communication deepened our mutual trust, and such mutual trust and understanding is essential to communication at non-governmental, cultural and media levels. I believe everyone sitting here for the forum today wants to tell the true stories of the country he/she represents and wants to see his/her country understood properly by the world.
Cultural communication and people-to-people exchanges have become a global trend, and China has been playing an increasingly important role, as proved by the establishment of friendship relation and all the endeavors the country has put in to maintain such relationship for long-term mutual benefits.
A Captivating Experience
Sabri Bilal Ahmed (Pakistan)
The past eight months I worked with the Beijing-based Asia-Pacific Center of China International News Exchange Center was a fruitful experience for me. I feel happy to have been able to contribute what I can, as a reporter of Pakistan Today (a news daily) and Diplo-Mag (a magazine), to introduce a real China to the Pakistan audience outside China.
Over the past eight months in China, I have visited 15 cities in different provinces. The experience has deepened my understanding of the Chinese people and inspired my thoughts about Sino-Pakistan relation in future. The friendliness and hospitality of people I met is fascinating, and is a best illustration of the unbreakable friendship between China and Pakistan.
Sōtō Sect and Lu Xun
Sakai Mikio (Japan)
International exchanges can often be traced to specific incidents in the bygone eras. A story unfolds and gives birth to many more. Fukui-Ken and Zhejiang Province are witness to two relevant stories.
The first happened in the 13th century. A Japanese Buddhist monk traveled to China in 1223 in order to seek the essence of Buddhism. He met the abbot of the Jingci temple in Hangzhou and received enlightenment from the Buddhism master. After his return to Japan, the Japanese monk started the Soto Sect, the largest and most influential of the three Zen sects in Japan. The second story that connects China and Japan occurred in the 20th century. In 1904, Lu Xun came to Japan to study medicine. He studied anatomy under the guidance of Fujino Genkuro, a professor at a medical school in Sendai. Lu Xun felt grateful to his Japanese teacher all his life. We hope such heart-warming stories live on in the hearts of people in both Fukui-Ken and Zhejiang Province.
In the 1980s, Fukui Television Station considered making a program about the above-mentioned two stories. However, back then, the Japanese media had never done any reporting assignments in China. Hangzhou Television Station and Zhejiang Provincial Government helped. With the Chinese assistance, we made two documentaries of the two historical events respectively in 1985 and 1988. The two documentaries were highly appreciated in Japan. It was in the 1980s that we began to partner with Chuncheon MBC, a broadcast television station, for making documentaries. The television stations in three places worked together. Later the friendly relations among the television stations were upgraded to the friendly relations of Zhejiang, Fukui and Gangwon (Chuncheon is the capital of the northeastern province of ROK).
The first documentary was titled . The production team interviewed mothers in China, Japan and ROK whose children were to take the national higher education entrance examination the next day in China, Japan and ROK.
Ever since then, more co-production projects have been achieved to make the traditional art and elements of social habits of the three countries shared by a wider audience. Over the years since 2005, more cross-cultural features have been woven into the cooperation, and as a result is the rediscovery of many interesting details of the real, daily life of ordinary people in the three different cultures. The documentaries, co-crafted by an international team, vividly present the most authentic life and cultural elements and unique qualities of ordinary people in the three countries. In my eye, the grassroots style of such production, which illustrates the magic of “humanity” as an eternal theme of the “global village” conception, is a valuable asset of all participating teams. Behind cultural difference is the sublime, ultimate goal of human beings to pursue peace, happiness and resonance.
One of the 2019 production themes of the trilateral cooperation is “traditional fermented food”. I am a firm believer in the value of concrete planning and implementation of a yearly plan followed by the three sides. It is also important to further improve the image presentation and interviewing skills of media professionals and take into consideration the compatibility of our products, that is, to try our best to produce high quality programs that can be conveniently shared through Internet.
