Zhejiang Wuju Opera Artists Visit Czech

From January 25 to 28, 2019, Zhejiang Wuju Opera Troupe staged four shows in Czech in commemoration of the 70th anniversary of the founding of the diplomatic relations between China and Czech and in celebration of the Chinese Spring Festival.

The first show was on January 25th at the theater of Convention Center in Prague. Red lanterns at the entrance to the theater and posters seen at all subway stations and streets in Prague explained why the theater had a full house at the gala show. In order to see the show, some local residents had served as volunteers at the venue for days.

Wuju Opera is a regional genre that essentially originated and now flourishes in Jinhua, a key city in central Zhejiang and known as Wu prefecture in ancient times. The opera carries on the ancient name Wu and retains the past glories of the region.

The programs staged in Czech in the January tour of Zhejiang Wuju Opera Troupe were carefully selected from the troupe’s repertoire and local folk entertainment. Dragon Dance, a thrilling folk entertaining show with local traditional characteristics of Jinhua, was staged as the show opener, getting audiences excited by the noise, kungfu moves, and elaborate choreography. Other showpieces from the repertoire were also crowd pleasers. One program highlighted facial makeup and costumes, which exposed the audience to the secrets of traditional Chinese theater arts. Some audience members volunteered to get their faces painted up before the show started.

At the debut on January 25, the visiting Zhejiang artists sang a Czech song with Czech vocalists. The audience responded warmly to the singing, clapping their hands to mark the rhythm. The show was attended by Czech VIPs as well as Chinese diplomats.

Zhang Jianmin, Chinese ambassador to Czech and a native of Hangzhou, the capital of Zhejiang Province, was touched by the performance given by artists from the home province. “The Vltava River that runs through Prague reminds me of Hangzhou. The Vltava River has many bridges, just like the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal with so many bridges. The Happy Chinese Spring Festival event serves as a bridge of friendship between China and Czech. I feel grateful to the artists of both countries who build such a bridge,” comments the ambassador after the show.

The artists of Zhejiang Wuju Opera Troupe staged shows for two consecutive evenings at the convention center. They also staged at a Chinese temple fair in Prague. Altogether, more than 4,000 people watched the evening performances and about 20,000 local residents visited the temple fair.

Ostrava, a city in the northeast of Czech, was the troupe’s second stop for their third road show on this visit. The venue was Aula Gong, a theater in the Lower Vítkovice, a former coal-mining, coke production and ironworks complex in the city centre which retains its historic industrial architecture. As Zhejiang artists’ show in Prague had gone viral through social media in Ostrava in the previous two days, local people thrilled to welcome the celebration from China. Over 1,000 people attended the show, including government officials of Ostrava and Moravian-Silesian Region, celebrities and local residents. The performance brought down the house and the standing ovation was long and loud. Government officials said that they hadn’t seen such a brilliant show for years and wished to see the return of the Zhejiang Wuju Opera Troupe in 2020.

The last show was staged on the evening of January 28 at Santovka Theater in Olomouc, a city in the east of Czech. It snowed that evening, but audience just flocked in. The house was more than full. There were additional seats in aisles and some audience members stood in rows in the back of the theater. Again the show brought down the house and audience cheered and applauded loudly. The show created a buzz on the local social media in Czech.
