Eight-Minute Ovation Celebrates Peony Pavilion by Zhejiang Yueju Opera Troupe
Though the Polish and the Chinese are in different language families, Zhejiang Yueju Opera artists demonstrated in January 2019 that art could bring peoples together even though they speak different languages. At the invitation of China-Poland Foundation for Exchanges and Development, Zhejiang Yueju Opera Troupe sent a group of over 50 artists and staffers on this tour to Poland in celebration of Chinese New Year, which fell on February 5 this year.
The centerpiece of the troupe’s roadshow in Poland was The Peony Pavilion, an opera masterpiece written by Tang Xianzu more than 400 years ago. The version performed in Poland was adapted and directed by Tao Tiefu, director of the troupe. The adaptation was specially designed for domestic and international audiences in well-equipped theaters in cities.
The troupe performed The Peony Pavilion at Polish Theater in Warsaw on the evening of January 15th. The elegant and highly aesthetic presentation of a romantic pursuit of freedom and love drew a warm response from the audience who gave an eight-minute standing ovation at the end of the performance.
The troupe’s second stop in Poland was Kielce, a famous tourist destination in south-central Poland with a long history and brilliant cultural heritage. The Yueju Opera artists staged a variety show including Yueju Opera highlights and musical performances. Unlike The Peony Pavilion performed by two female artists who act as man and woman respectively in the play, the highlights from Yueju Opera repertoire were performed by both male and female artists, warmly welcomed by Polish audiences. Yueju Opera started over 100 years ago in Zhejiang and matured in Shanghai, the biggest metropolis in Jiangnan. Since the very beginning, all the roles in the opera genre have been mainly played by women artists. Even now, male Yueju Opera artists are far and few between. But Zhejiang Yueju Opera Troupe has kept trying to present male artists in new plays in the hope that male artists may bring something new and unprecedented in the tradition. The troupe found it reassuring to see its male performers win recognition in Poland. No wonder the 94-year-old Jin Baohua, a senior Yueju master was very much pleased with the news.
It is worth mentioning that prominent Polish artists had looked at the programs of the variety show in advance and advised the troupe to make some adjustment. Celestial Beauty Scattering Flowers was staged at their advice. Originally, Mei Lanfang designed and performed this solo Peking Opera performance first around 1920. Yueju Opera artist Xie Lili performed a new version of singing and dancing adapted from Mei Lanfang’s tour de force.
Among the audience were many who had watched the first show in Warsaw and had come over to Kielce to enjoy the second show, which they had known would be different and equally brilliant.
As soon as t the show at Kielce was finished, the troupe rushed overnight to Krakow, one of the oldest cities and a center of culture, art, education, and economy in Poland. The troupe staged its third show on the road at Confucius Institute in Krakow which operates in partnership with Jagiellonian University. It was a gala show similar to the one held at Kielce, including traditional Chinese music and Yueju Opera highlights. It was a success. The Confucius Institute was founded in 2006.
