During the Ming (1368 - 1644) and Qing dynasties (1644 - 1911), Zhuxian Town was renowned as the foremost of "China's Four Famous Towns". Located along the Jialu River, it was a crucial water and land transportation hub leading to Yangzhou since the Tang (619 - 907) and Song (960 - 1279) dynasties. In the Ming Dynasty, it became Kaifeng's only water-land transfer port, leading to its rapid prosperity.
Today, the town has revived its former bustling scene with boats plying day and night, bright lights along both shores, and magnificent river views. Adding to its charm, Zhuxian Town is famous for its woodblock New Year paintings, which have earned widespread acclaim.
Zhuxian Town's woodblock New Year paintings originated from the woodblock door god prints of Bianliang. These paintings encapsulate a millennium of development in Chinese woodblock New Year art and deep cultural significance, becoming a representative cultural symbol of Kaifeng and the Central Plains region. Nowadays, these paintings incorporate modern elements, and through the dedicated efforts of generations of intangible cultural heritage inheritors, they continue to blend the art of carving and printing, preserving and conveying the essence of this traditional craft.
