Kaifeng, an ancient cultural city, is bisected by the Grand Canal. Zhouqiao Bridge, at the city's central axis and the Bianhe River section of the Sui-Tang Grand Canal, was a vital transportation hub during the Tang(AD 618 - 907) and Northern Song Dynasties (AD 960 - 1127).

Recent archaeological excavations have unearthed significant finds, including large stone carvings and the layout of the Grand Canal's Kaifeng section. In March 2023, Zhouqiao Bridge and nearby Bianhe River ruins were named among the top ten archaeological discoveries of 2022.
