In the Chinese community, the Double Ninth Festival (Chong Yang Festival/重阳节/重陽節chóng yáng jié) is an important day for showing respect to the elderly.
For centuries, the concept of filial piety - including respect and care for the elderly, is a fundamental virtue embodied in the Chinese nation. According to the ancient and mysterious book Yi Jing, or The Book of Changes, the number "9" was thought to be Yang, connotating positive. The Chinese ancestors considered the Chong Yang Festival (double 9) an auspicious day worth celebrating.
On this day, there are a couple of ways to celebrate, including eating Chong Yang cake, climbing mountains, family get-together, and so forth.
In this video, we have invited an expat called Sumayysh living in Wenzhou, who comes from Mauritius and is keen on Chinese culture to experience the most authentic customs of the Chong Yang Festival in a local famous mountain - Yandang Mountain.
