Ningbo, a prominent port city in China, has maintained close trade links with France, as evidenced by the latest trade data released by Ningbo Customs on May 7.

In the first quarter of this year, total trade between Ningbo and France reached 51 billion yuan ($7.06 billion), marking a 9 percent year-on-year increase.

Breaking down the figures, Ningbo's exports to France totaled 43.9 billion yuan, an increase of 9.3 percent compared to the same period last year, while imports from the European country amounted to 7.1 billion yuan, reflecting a 6.9 percent increase year-on-year.

From January to March, Ningbo exported machinery and electrical products worth 24.7 billion yuan to France, representing a 10.7 percent increase year-on-year and constituting 48.4 percent of its total exports to France during the same period.

On May 7, Ningbo Handian Trading Co. Ltd successfully cleared 136 refrigerators for shipment to France. The company's spokesperson, Han Yiping, emphasized the significance of the French market, noting, "France serves as our primary export destination, accounting for approximately 30% of our total export share. In the first four months of this year, we have already shipped over 50,000 refrigerators to France." Han highlighted the growing purchasing power in the French market, with orders already filling up for the current month.

During this period, beauty and skincare products, agricultural goods, and basic organic chemicals were the key commodities sourced from France. Beauty and skincare products emerged as the top category, with imports reaching 2.6 billion yuan, a 15.5 percent year-on-year growth.

Di Peng, a manager at Ningbo Leadgo E-commerce Co. Ltd, expressed optimism about the anticipated 10 percent to 15 percent year-on-year increase in imports of related products this year. This growth is attributed to the strong recognition and loyalty of Chinese consumers to premium French beauty brands.

Additionally, imports of French wines have maintained steady demand. In the first quarter, Ningbo imported 1.2 billion yuan in wines, reflecting a 7.8 percent increase year-on-year, with imports of French wines nearing 60 million yuan.

As this year marks the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and France, as well as the 20th anniversary of their comprehensive strategic partnership, the robust trade figures between Ningbo and France underscore the deepening economic ties and mutual benefits enjoyed by both nations.
