At 12 o’clock at noon on 8th April, an online conference named "The Belt and Road for Health-Dialogue on Prevention and Control of COVID-19" was conducted in the First Affiliated Hospital of Wenzhou Medical University. At the other end of the video call, there were overseas medical experts in Indonesia and Mongolia. Medical and nursing experts of epidemic prevention and control from the 1st Affiliated Hospital of Wenzhou Medical University shared with the overseas medical experts about their protective measures and lessons against COVID-19.

As the sole designated provincial and municipal hospital admitting critically ill patients in Wenzhou, the 1st Affiliated Hospital of Wenzhou Medical University admitted 81% of moderately and critically ill patients. It was the main battlefield against COVID-19 in Wenzhou. From practices, it has explored the “Wenzhou strategies”, which not only protected all its medical personnel from infection but also fully avoided missed diagnosis of COVID-19 cases. Thus, it has maximized the survival of critically ill patients.

At present, Indonesia and Mongolia are in the initial stage of COVID-19 prevention and control. Owing to their limited medical conditions, both of the countries are in urgent need of Chinese medical institutions’ sharing with them about their valuable lessons on COVID-19 prevention and control, especially key technologies like diagnostic strategies.

As the leader of the Wenzhou expert panel for preventing and treating COVID-19 by traditional Chinese medicine, Professor Cheng Jinguo introduced how to treat COVID-19 with traditional Chinese medicine, important roles of traditional Chinese medicine, “three drugs and three prescriptions” recommended by the National Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, strengths of TCM prevention and other TCM therapies with “Wenzhou characteristics”.

Professor Cao Jianming particularly introduced that medical resources were properly distributed and hospitals fully cooperated with each other to build three major medical battlefields to precisely treat different types of COVID-19 patients, thus ensuring “unified command, unified standards, and unified treatment” for medical treatment and guarantee procedures of Wenzhou.

In combination with the hospital’s experience in COVID-19 prevention and patients treatment, Professor Xia Jinglin introduced the experience of the 1st Affiliated Hospital of Wenzhou Medical University in COVID-19 diagnosis, treatment, prevention, and control. In the epidemic period, the hospital promptly summed up its experience. At last, it reached three expert consensuses and brought forth one expert viewpoint to guide and coordinate treatment in county, city and district-level hospitals.

Professor Zhuge Qichuan of the Neurosurgery Department held a sharing session known as “New Measures against COVID-19: Introduction of Wenzhou’s Experience”. Professor Li Yuping, as Head of the Department of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, shared her experience regarding how to effectively preventing patients with mild symptoms from progressing into critically ill patients. As Head of the Nursing Department, Sun Caixia shared her experience with the theme of “Hospital Management for COVID-19 Wards: Examination, Screening and Patient Triage”.

Medical experts of Indonesia and Mongolia were listening before the video very carefully, and raised many in-depth questions about problems with their countries’ COVID-19 prevention and control in the subsequent questioning and answering part.

“There are no borders in the field of medicine. I hope that we could share our relatively mature "Wenzhou experience" on COVID-19 prevention and control with other countries to help them better prevent and control the epidemic, in order to save more patients,” said Professor Xia Jinlin.
