Shiai can be seen on all islands of Shengsi, on small islands of Shengshan, Gouqi, Bixia and Huaniao in particular. Shiai can be used to disperse cold, clear sights, relieve heat, protect livers and gallbladders. Most islanders use the plant to make tea, which is very popular among the locals. Shiai tea also has become the essential hospitality tea of the islanders. To pass down the Shiai tea production skills from generation to generation, Shengsi has carried out measures to rescue and protect this folk specialty. In 2009 Shiai tea was included in the third batch of intangible cultural heritage list of Shengsi County.

石艾在嵊泗小岛上都有生长，特别是嵊山、枸杞、壁下、花鸟等小岛几乎随处可见。因由石艾制成的石艾茶，具有温经散寒，清目消暑，护肝利胆等功效，故备受当地群众的喜欢。岛上居民多以这种植物泡茶。石艾茶也是海岛人家中必备的待客茶。为了石艾茶制作技艺代代相传，嵊泗抓紧实施民间传统制作方法抢救性收集和记录，并于2009年把石艾茶列入嵊泗县第三批非物质文化遗产名录。
