In recent years, Jintang Town of Zhoushan City, Zhejiang Province has initiated the construction of beautiful rivers and lakes, and implemented a comprehensive treatment measures including ecological restoration, riverside renovation, landscape creation, and cultural improvement. 

As the greatest river in the reach of Jintang, Daliu Backbone River, with a total length of 6.94km, is tasked with flood control and drainage work for about 30 km2 within the reach, and also functions as the main irrigation river way of fresh water.

In the past, rubbish and waste water were directly discharged into the Daliu Backbone River; furthermore, the cross section of the river was narrow, with the widest part only 26m in length, the river thus suffered a severe deposition problem. During typhoon and flood season or in heavy rainfall weather, the water in the river often overflowed the bank revetment, even flowed cross the roads, inundating the farmland along the bank and the dwellings of ordinary people in local low-lying terrains.

As the measures of "Water Governance in Five Aspects" are further carried out, multiple projects have been successively implemented for Daliu Backbone River, including river way expansion, dredging, bank revetment, tractor-ploughing road construction, extension of supporting bridges, etc.

Dinghai District has figured out the "Implement Tailored Measures for Every River" scheme for the renovation of Daliu Backbone River, in which it is stipulated that all river chiefs at all levels and the river chief selected from the folks should follow the daily patrol supervision mechanism, carry out pollution regulation, and strictly investigate illegal acts to advance the pollution treatment. Jintang Town has recruited retired cadres and organized them into a patrolling team who get to know more about ecological problems by investigating in secret and listening to people's opinions, etc. It also assigned professional cleaners and teams to be responsible for daily clean-keeping and maintenance.

Jintang Town has launched the project for the concentrated treatment of rural domestic wastewater in 2015. With regards to the wetland treatment in the five communities of Xianju, Liuxing, Heping, Dapu and Xinfeng along Daliu Backbone River, manual mode has been adopted uniformly, and the wastewater discharged by people living in the periphery are handled in an ecological way. 

Nowadays, the water quality of Daliu Backbone River has reached above Class III, and the widest part is expanded to 60m.
