Inspired by National Treasure (Chinese:国家宝藏), the hottest cultural exploration show two yeas ago, the Wulin Branch of Zhejiang Museum launched a “Little Treasure Keepers” program in 2017, recruiting a group of primary school students to be the museum docents.

The little treasure keepers’ job is to tell the stories of the relics and further the public’s understanding of the cultural and historical collections, in a similar way as the national treasure keepers in the TV show who perform to interpret the historical mystery behind the treasures.

Yunshu Zhang is one of the little keepers. Born in 2013 and nicknamed Little Mushroom, the girl is an erudite of the well-known treasures in the exhibition hall.

From the Wangong sedan chair, its delicate woodcarving craft to the “Ten-mile Red Dowry”, Zhang can tell you almost everything about the treasure in both Chinese and English. (Wangong sedan chair, a kind of dowry of wealthy families in east Zhejiang Province.)

The girl has visited museums at home and abroad including the ones in Beijing, Germany, Singapore and Australia since she was one year old, according to her parents.

Zhang is trained to memorize the stories of the exhibits. Though with still limited vocabulary, she can explain to visitors fluently in two languages as a result of practice.

To date, the museum has over 50 little treasure keepers. Each young docent is able to guide visitor through an exhibition hall.
