Haining shadow puppetry, a cherished cultural gem from Zhejiang, recently took center stage in Hungary. As part of the 20th anniversary celebration of friendly relations between Zhejiang province and Baranya County, this ancient art form enchanted local audiences.

The exhibition, titled "Encountering Poetic Zhejiang in the 24 Solar Terms", seamlessly blended Chinese wisdom with traditional crafts. It was themed around the 24 solar terms, showcasing China's rich heritage through silk, tea, porcelain, stone carving, woodwork, embroidery, and lacquerware.

Among the exhibits, the shadow puppetry piece Yingyun stood out. Crafted by Xu Luyan, a master inheritor, these delicate figures came alive under the play of light. Their vibrant colors and intricate details captivated visitors, reflecting centuries of Chinese craftsmanship.

Haining shadow puppetry, with roots dating back to the Southern Song Dynasty (1127-1279), has become a national treasure. Its inclusion on China's intangible cultural heritage list and UNESCO's Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity underscores its significance.

As Haining continues to share its stories through shadow puppetry, lantern art, and other traditions, it sails forth as a cultural ambassador, connecting hearts across borders.
