As a young student from Guinea Conakry, stepping onto Chinese soil for the first time was both thrilling and overwhelming. Coming from the vibrant capital of Guinea, I had heard about China's rapid modernization, its ancient culture, and its growing ties with Africa. But no story or article could have prepared me for the transformative journey I was about to embark on.
My first encounter with China began in the bustling metropolis of Shanghai. The city, with its futuristic skyline, bustling streets, and vibrant pace, felt like stepping into a whole new world.
Hangzhou: A Land of Innovation and Green Development
After my initial time in Shanghai, I moved to Hangzhou, which would become my academic home. Hangzhou, known for its natural beauty and innovative spirit, was a different experience. The serene West Lake and the cutting-edge technological landscape coexisted in harmony, offering both inspiration and tranquility.
In Hangzhou, I witnessed China's commitment to low-carbon development firsthand. I visited green urban spaces powered by solar panels and wind turbines, marveling at the possibility of applying these technologies in my own country. I began to dream of a future where Guinea could collaborate with China to bring sustainable, renewable energy solutions to our continent, addressing some of our most pressing challenges.
Learning and Mutual Growth: The China-Africa Connection
At Zhejiang University of Science and Technology (ZUST), where I am pursuing a degree in International Economics and Trade, I have been privileged to experience China's educational and cultural richness. My studies have exposed me to world-class academic programs, but more importantly, they have introduced me to the spirit of collaboration between China and Africa.
One of the most impressive moments during my time at ZUST was visiting a Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) project alongside my Chinese and African peers. We saw how Chinese investments were not only transforming infrastructure in rural areas of Africa but also fostering hope and connection. Roads, bridges, and schools were being built, but these were more than physical structures, they were symbols of shared progress and a collective future.
Cultural Exchange: The Power of Mutual Respect
Beyond the academic and economic realms, cultural exchange has played a pivotal role in my journey. At ZUST, I've had the opportunity to participate in events where I shared the richness of Guinea's culture, its music, dances, and cuisine with my Chinese classmates. The mutual curiosity and respect were heartwarming. Likewise, learning about China's ancient customs and traditions deepened my understanding of the values that shape this nation's rapid progress.
