By 2027, the fish farming output of Quzhou in East China's Zhejiang province is expected to top 50,000 metric tons, generating a comprehensive output value of 5 billion yuan ($689.37 million).

That's according to details released at the recent Quzhou Fish Industry High-quality Development Conference.

If achieved, that level of output will account for one-sixth of the projected 300 billion yuan output value for indigenous fish across all Zhejiang province.

Located at the headwaters of the Qiantang River, Quzhou boasts pristine water quality – providing ideal conditions for the growth of its indigenous fish industry.

Quzhou has conducted fish stock enhancement programs, releasing over 100 million fish fry annually, with an increasing proportion of indigenous species. It has also carried out a comprehensive aquatic resources survey, identifying over 70 indigenous species, 20 of which hold significant market value.

Quzhou is focusing on quality and branding, emphasizing five main species – grass carp, stream fish, mandarin fish, bighead carp, and sturgeon. Add to that, collaborations with research institutions aim to develop standardized farming practices and quality standards, enhancing the overall quality of Quzhou's fish.

Indeed, the city is fostering geographical indication brands and is encouraging its localities to cultivate key products. To date, Quzhou has developed four county-level fish brands and one geographical indication product.

The effect of all this is that the indigenous fish industry has become a key driver of prosperity and rural vitalization in Quzhou.
