These days, at an edible bamboo plantation in Jiangyuan village – located in Hejia township, Changshan county, Quzhou, Zhejiang province – villagers are bustling about harvesting and transporting bamboo shoots, in a perfect picture of productivity and abundance.

To address issues of abandoned land and flooding, the village introduced high-quality bamboo varieties such as Lin'an bamboo, Lei bamboo, and Phyllostachys dulcis, or sweetshoot bamboo.

Since then things have flourished and right now is the peak time for bringing in the Lei bamboo shoots. Despite the impact of adverse weather that led to a slight decrease in production compared with last year, each 670-square-meter plot still yields around 900 kilograms of Lei bamboo shoots.

"We added a 10-centimeter layer of soil over the original bamboo grove soil and a 20-centimeter layer of rice husks in the previous autumn to insulate the land," said Deng Xiaofeng, the head of edible bamboo plantation. The village also repaired irrigation channels to ensure a reliable water supply.

Over the years, Jiangyuan village has expanded its bamboo cultivation, with over 90 percent of households now growing the crop on a total of more than 2 square kilometers.

In 2024, the village's bamboo shoot production reached about 2.4 million kilograms, worth over 48 million yuan ($6.59 million).
