Zhoushan is taking steps to enhance the popularity of its island specialties and create new wealth opportunities for islanders by developing 10 industrial chains in seven categories, local media outlets reported.

These include products like Zhoushan bayberries, Dinghai squid, Putuo tea, and Shengsi mussels.

The city is building a database of island specialties and crafting individualized plans for each county and industrial chain. The focus is on strengthening weak areas in production chains by improving farming techniques, processing, branding, and market access.

Notable projects include the development of a 10-billion-yuan ($1.4 billion) squid and mussel industry and upgrading national-level marine ranches. To date, four local specialties have gained European geographic indication protection, and the local tourism economy generates over 3 billion yuan annually.
